Cape Epic Training Camps

Cape Epic training camps are an essential ingredient in preparing for the Cape Epic. Everyone does them, so no matter where you fit into the field you will benefit from attending such a training camp. We have found that one of the best ways to get the training hours in and to get your mind right is by doing back to back riding days that simulate a couple of stages at the Cape Epic. These multiple days are a great time to test out riding strategies in terms of food, drinks, riding with your partner and bike and equipment setup. It is also an opportunity to meet some other riders who are going to do the epic as well as some who have done it before.

Last years Cape Epic training camp was a huge success and all the riders who completed the epic said that the training camp had been a vital ingredient in their success. It was also great to be riding at the Cape Epic and then see some familiar faces in the middle of nowhere like old friends meeting up.

Although we will be able to provide some assistance and backup riders should be fully self sufficient, food, drink and mechanical wise.  The routes will have scheduled refreshment stops, riders should aim to be self sufficient as much as possible.

West Coast Epic Ride Weekend 28-30 December 2006

The first weekend will take place at the end of December in the Western Cape. We will be based in Langebaan and be riding from there. This weekend  is 16 weeks before the start of the Cape Epic and is the ideal opportunity to get some long rides in and see if the pre-season base training has had any benefit. It is also a good time to test nutrition, equipment, clothing etc. We have planned 4 days of riding with the first two being the longest and the toughest and then it gets slightly easier towards the end. Although these days will have their fair share of climbing, they are more about spending days in the saddle and doing multiple days of 100km+ distances. All of the routes are quite scenic and reveal some great places to ride on the West Coast. It will be hot and windy which is probably not a bad thing because some stages in the Karoo for Cape Epic 2007 will no doubt be hot dry and windy.

The route will be similar to the West Coast training ride done last year.

Details of the ride are:

Day 1: Koringberg area
105-120km
1400-1700m ascent
100% dirt roads
3 steep climbs and technical singletrack descents

Day 2: Piketberg
115 km
2300 m ascent
70% dirt roads
2 big climbs, 1 very technical decent and 1 long jeep track decent

Day 3:

Langebaan – St Helena Bay and Paternoster – Brunch at Paternoster Lodge
70-80km
800m ascent
70% dirt

Sabie Epic Ride Weekend 23-25 February 2007

The second weekend will be at the end of February and will be held in Sabie Mpumalanga. This will be a 3 day epic training ride and we will use the Sabie Subaru Classic as the second day. This is 5 weeks before the start of the Cape Epic and is the last real opportunity to get some high mileage in that will pay off in the event. This is also about the time when most training programs should be peaking before the tapering stage. Day 1 will be a really big day and a truely Cape Epic like stage, while day 2 will be technical and tough as the Sabie Subaru Classic has become known. Day 3 will be technical but shorter as we ride some of the best trails in the Sabie area. We will use Sabie as the base and ride from there everyday.

Details of the ride are:

Day 1:
160km
3000m of climbing
A long ride via Long Tom pass, Lydenburg, Sudwala caves and back to Sabie.
See Sabie mountain biking ride from last year

Day 2:
Sabie Subaru Classic 80km route

Day 3:
Probably around 40-60km taking in a combination of the available trails in the Sabie area

What we provide:
We hope to have a back up vehicle for Day 1 & cold water & ice box

Accommodation
Accommodation in Sabie

Cost:
R 150 for fuel & ice
