West Coast Cycle Race

West Coast Cycle Race

The West Coast Cycle Race takes place in the West Coast National Park. This beautiful national park is located between Yzerfontein and Langebaan on the Cape West Coast. The cycle race happens every year in December and forms part of the PPA race calendar. The race is organised and hosted by the West Coast Honorary Rangers and all proceeds go to development projects in the national park.  The race is unique in that it takes place inside a national park and all the roads are closed to cars for the duration of the race.  There are two distances to choose from a 30km and 80km. The long route winds its way all the way around the magnificent Langebaan Lagoon. Both routes are deceptively hilly and although there are no major mountains the ups and downs will keep cyclists on their toes as they keep the momentum up.

The post race festivities promise to be fun for everyone right on the lagoon at the park office grounds. There will be food stalls entertainment for the kids, a beer tent for the parents and many great lucky draw prizes.

West Coast Cycle Route

Cycling in the West coast National Park is always a rewarding experience with the beautiful views over the Lagoon and the pristine fynbos bush. The wildlife and especially the birdlife is exceptional. Both races start at the newly built park gates on the Langebaan side. The first section is uphill around Seeberg followed by the roller coaster hills up onto a ridge overlooking the southern end of the lagoon and Geelbek. Then its downhill past Geelbek one of the first proclaimed farmsteads in South Africa. The 30km riders turn around at Duinebos the entrance to the archeologically significant sand dunes and head back for the hill top finish.

The 80km riders have only just warmed up now and head out towards the R27 before turning around and heading out onto the peninsula. Here the views are spectacular with the Atlantic ocean on the left and the sprawling Lagoon on the right. As the tides rush in and out of the lagoon, they bring life to small and large creatures and the the water is continuously changing colour in an uncountable number shades of greens and blues.

The 80km route turns at the idylic Kraalbaai, with its white beaches and picture perfect yachts moored in its protected waters. Heading back on the left near Preekstoel is the site of Eves footprint, the oldest footprint of modern man. Also on the left will be the old village of Churchaven established by fisherman in the early 1800s. The last stop is at the Duinebos water table and then its a short climb back past Geelbek and on towards the finish. The hilltop finish is on top of the hill respectfully known by local cyclists as "Little Kilimanjaro", the kick in the tail will separate the winners from the also rans.
